Citizens Gas Reminds Community to Call Before You Dig

INDIANAPOLIS – Citizens Gas would like to remind residents to call the State's One-Call Service at 811 to have utility lines marked before they dig a hole or engage in any earth-moving activity.

Residents should remember that natural gas pipelines, electric power lines, communications lines, and other utility services could be within a few feet of the surface and are not always located near the street. Homeowners are required by law to call 2 working days before they plan to dig anywhere on their property. This will give the utility companies time to locate and mark all of the underground lines and pipes, to prevent damage to property. There is no charge for this service. Here are the steps needed for a smooth digging project:

  1. Outline project with white paint
  2. Call the Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service at 811
  3. Know your county and township where you are digging
  4. Provide the name and phone number of the person digging (if not you)
  5. Give the utility companies time to respond (2 or more days)

In the event of a ruptured gas line at their home or business, residents are reminded of the following:

  • Leave the area of the gas leak immediately, being careful not to light matches, touch electrical switches or use the telephone. Also do not start vehicles of any kind that are located near the gas leak.
  • Once away from the area of the leak, call Citizens Gas at (317) 924-3311.
  • Remain in the safe area until emergency personnel arrive.
