Heartland Gas Pipeline Begins Delivering Clean-Burning Natural Gas

INDIANAPOLIS Citizens Gas & Coke Utility and ProLiance Energy announced today that their new Heartland Gas Pipeline has begun transporting clean-burning natural gas to Central Indiana . Heartland Gas Pipeline is Central Indiana's first significant access to affordable gas supplies originating in the western U.S. and Canada and the first new source of gas supply for Citizens Gas in 17 years.

A 50/50 joint venture among subsidiaries of Citizens Gas and ProLiance, Heartland Gas Pipeline is transporting up to 80,000 dekatherms of natural gas per day through a 16-inch diameter pipeline that runs approximately 25 miles from an interconnect with Midwestern Gas Transmission near Sullivan, Indiana to the Citizens Gas Underground Gas Storage Operations near Worthington, Indiana. Construction of the $19 million pipeline began in April and was completed in November.

“Heartland's access to growing gas supply sources from the western U.S. and Canada will enhance our ability to manage spikes in wholesale natural gas costs, which can occur due to cold weather and supply disruptions, such as those we saw last year from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We expect Heartland will save our customers as much as $6 million per year starting this winter,” said Carey Lykins, President and CEO of Citizens Gas.

Heartland Gas Pipeline also provides benefits to Indiana 's economy, according to John Talley, President of ProLiance. “Power generators, industries and other energy consumers are increasingly turning to clean-burning natural gas to meet new federal clean air mandates. Heartland's access to affordable gas supplies will help Indiana meet its environmental goals while preserving existing jobs and attracting new ones,” Talley said.
