Mercury Debate Heats Up Again
The debate over mercury emissions is once again reaching a feverish pitch. Two recent scientific reports say that mercury levels near some coal-fired power plants are much greater than previously thought, giving critics of the current administration's plan to curb such toxins the ammo they need to change the regulatory protocol.
At least five states in the Northeast and parts of Canada are considered to be mercury "hotspots" where the pollutant hovers overhead and creates dangers for local eco-systems and any small children and pregnant women who might eat contaminated fish, all according to the journal BioScience. The studies may prove to be significant, prompting a change in the methods by which utilities would have to control their mercury releases.

Corporate America Feuds Over Global Warming
The global-warming debate is shifting from science to economics.
For years, the fight over the Earth's rising temperature has been mostly over what's causing it: fossil-fuel emissions or natural factors beyond man's control. A growing number of these companies are pushing for a mandatory emissions limit, or "cap." Some see a lucrative new market in clean-energy technologies. Many figure a regulation is politically inevitable and they want to be in the room when it's negotiated, to minimize the burden that falls on them.

They also represent a considerable financial gamble for the utility industry, which is moving ahead at a rapid pace despite uncertainty ranging from environmental opposition to finding a home for radioactive nuclear waste.
